The common belief that as one grows older one needs to become decrepit and dysfunctional is simply not so! I have come to believe that just the opposite is true! I have learned that each of us is born with a purpose, a burning desire to be and do great things, never before even imagined things, an ideal life of limitless peace, joy, love, beauty and health. It all started about ten years ago when the groom of a wedding I was officiating at Logan Shoals Vista Point said, “Wow! How old are you, anyway?” I did not realize my appearance was “elderly.” I mean, really? Then, later on, when preparing to perform the wedding of an Asian couple at the same location, we started walking out the trail to the overlook and they flanked me and took both my arms to assist me in walking! I felt sort of embarrassed! I did not realize that many Asians are taught by their culture to help old people. Also, I did not “get it” that I was old.
About twenty years ago an orthopedist informed me that my right knee needed replacing and that I shouldn’t water ski any more. Also, both of my rotator cuffs were torn and creating quite a bit of pain which limited my range of motion. But I was not willing to believe that doctor. You see, I bought a ski boat at Lake Tahoe back in 1960, then taught myself to water ski and I’ve been a master water skier ever since. So, I just continued water skiing anyway and I went “to work” on the process of healing myself according to what I learned (and taught) in Science of Mind. Once in awhile, I even remembered to take a couple of aspirins for the pain.
Well, that continued until four summers ago when we launched the boat as usual: Gail was my driver, Aiden my newest observer. I leaped into the water, put the ski on my right foot and yelled “Hit it!” I could not get up out of the water! I tried three more times. My right knee just could not support me any longer! I learned that when the body is really damaged, in addition to my spiritual work, I needed modern medical help! About two months ago a master orthopedist, Dr. Eric Boyden (who had previously replaced both of Gail’s hips) performed a total joint replacement for my right knee! It is a complete success and a miracle of healing! But my body is still compromised elsewhere. So, on February 18th, another master orthopedist, Dr. Tom Christensen, also of Reno Orthopaedic Center, will be replacing my left shoulder and then in six more weeks or so, the right! The miracle is, even though I have not advanced spiritually enough to heal myself without medical science, there exists the knowledge and the means to repair my damaged body! And I am responsible for correcting my former erroneous belief that advanced age requires limiting one’s abilities, activities or joy in living! How’s THAT as an example of Oneness? As Ernest Holmes liked to say: “There’s as much God in a pill or a surgeon’s knife as there is in a prayer!” God, Life, you, me ~ everything is SO good! “Hit it!”
